Grade Level 9 – Required (for recommended students)
This course is a course designed to help students adjust to the rigors of high school academics. Emphasis will be placed on organization skills, study skills, test taking techniques and goal setting. Students will be encouraged to formulate habits for success that may be used throughout life.

This course is designed to meet the needs of students with Individual Services Plans. Students will learn and practice basic reading, writing and math skills in preparation for the Ohio Graduation Tests. They will also review content in the areas of science and social studies. Students will be introduced to a variety of study techniques and materials.
210 English 9 - Introduction to Literature and Composition I
Grade Level: 9 - Required
This course is designed to introduce the student to the various literary forms. The elements of fiction, non-fiction, poetry, drama, and mythology are discussed and explored. Students are introduced to Shakespearean drama through the study of Romeo and Juliet. Strong emphasis on the basics of English grammar is also an essential part of this course, leading to development of solid sentence structure necessary for the writing of single-paragraph themes.
210D/220D English 1D/2D Language/Writing Skills 1/2
Grade Level: 9, 10, 11, 12 – Required
This course is modified to meet the needs of students with Individual Services Plans. Its focus is on language and writing skills needed to communicate and function in daily life. Students learn to make a variety of choices that impact style and syntax such as sentence structure and sentence patterns. Applying techniques to expand vocabulary and conventional spelling use is also targeted. Punctuation, capitalization, handwriting, and other conventions to make written communication clear are other areas of concentration. Students are encouraged to develop writing through an organized process and share their writing with others.
210L English 9L – Introduction to Literature and Grammar/Composition I

This course is modified to meet the needs of students with Individual Services Plans. Students are introduced to a variety of literary forms including: myths, fables, legends, short stories, biography, poetry and drama. Emphasis on the basics of English grammar prepares students to write short compositions. Students learn to use an electronic dictionary as a tool for better writing/reading. A summer reading project is required.

This course is modified to meet the needs of students with Individual Services Plans. The reading course is designed to encourage students to read with accuracy and fluency to comprehend a variety of texts. Attention to non-fiction, fiction, and functional texts such as newspapers, want ads, recipes, manuals, white and yellow pages etc. is the focus of this class.

220 English 10 - General Literature and Composition II
Grade Level: 10 - Required
This course is designed to reinforce the various literary forms. The techniques of drama, narrative elements in fiction, poetical forms, mythology, and oral interpretation are explored. Students continue the study of Shakespeare in the tragedy Julius Caesar or the comedy Merchant of Venice. The composition segment of this course stresses development of single and multiple paragraph essays through study and practice of paragraph unity, cohesiveness, paragraph types, and the use of transitions.
220L English 10L – World Literature and Grammar/Composition II
Grade Level: 10 – Required
This course is modified to meet the needs of students with Individual Services Plans. Students are introduced to foreign cultures through the exploration of literature from around the world, including that of Africa, Europe, the Far East and South America. Students continue to study basic English grammar in order to further their ability to write longer essays. The electronic dictionary is used as a tool to develop reading/writing skills. A summer reading project is required.
223 Honors English 10 – Literature and Composition II
Grade Level 10 – Enrollment by recommendation of English Department
This course is designed to explore in depth the various literary forms. The techniques of drama, narrative elements in fiction, poetical forms, mythology, and oral interpretation are explored. In depth study of drama would include the study of Othello in addition to the required Julius Caesar or Merchant of Venice. Extensive reading or works of fiction and nonfiction are required. The composition segment of this course concentrates on the development of multi-paragraph themes, personal writing style and research.
230 English 11 - American Literature and Composition III
Grade Level: 11 – Required
This course covers the major works of American writers from the political writing of the founders of our country through the writers of the 20th Century. Students learn to evaluate literature critically in terms of its place in society. The composition segment of the course further develops skills needed in the writing of longer essays, focusing on five-paragraph essays and the research paper. Students continue the study of Shakespeare with Hamlet.
230L English 11L – American Literature and Composition III
Grade Level: 11 – Required
This course is modified to meet the needs of students with Individual Services Plans. Students explore the literature of the United States from the political writings of the nation’s founders to the culturally diverse writing of the 20th century. Basic English grammar skills are reviewed in order for students to write longer essays on specific topics. The electronic dictionary is used as needed. A summer reading project is required.
233 Honors English 11- American Literature and Composition III
Grade Level: 11 – Honors English 10 or recommendation of English 10 teacher
This course is designed to study the development of American Literature emphasizing political/historical influences on the literature. The composition segment emphasizes development of personal writing style as well as various types of research. Students continue the study of Shakespeare with Hamlet and Taming of the Shrew.
240 English 12 - British Literature and Composition IV
Grade Level: 12 - Required
This course traces the development of British literature from the Anglo-Saxon period to the twentieth century, with emphasis on the major works and writers of each period. The development of the English language from Old English through Middle, Early Modern, and Modern is also emphasized. Analytical writing as well as research paper format and procedure is stressed in the composition portion of the course, preparing students for the requirements of college as well as of the business world.
240L English 12L – British Literature and Composition IV
Grade Level: 12 – Required
This course is modified to meet the needs of students with Individual Services Plans. Students explore the literature of Britain from Anglo-Saxon times through the modern period, focusing on epic poetry, Chaucer’s tales, the Arthurian legends, Shakespeare (Macbeth), the essayists, and modern drama. Basic English grammar skills are reviewed as needed to support writing longer essays. A senior project is completed which follows a modified term paper format.
242 Honors English 12 – British Literature and Composition IV
This course traces the development of British literature from the Anglo-Saxon period to the twentieth
century, with emphasis on the major works and writers of each period. The development of the language as well as the influences of historic events, art and music. Analytical writing as well as research paper format and procedure are stressed. Research papers and presentations using a variety of media are essential components of this course.
250 Creative Writing
Grade Level: 11,12 – Elective
This course explores the tools, techniques, and angles of writing. It provides students a chance to express their thoughts and feelings through creative rather than analytical writing. Students will use the above-polished tools, techniques, and angles to write original essays, poems, scripts, and stories.

Grade 9 by placement only
The focus of this course is journalism and the writing techniques needed to produce a publication. Writing will include news articles, editorials, and features as well as captions and headlines. There is also a focus on the elements of layout design for the publication of the school newspaper and the yearbook.

This course is designed for students to participate in a number of dramatic experiences---skits, one-act plays, monologues, and improvisations.---giving students a general survey approach for the application of acting skills. (**Will fulfill Fine Arts requirement)
275 Drama II**
Grade Level: 9, 10, 11, 12 – Elective with permission of Department Chair or Drama Teacher
An in-depth study of the art of acting with application of acting skills. Other aspects of theater such as costume design, make-up and stage sets will be taught. The course will be a laboratory of creative expression and productions for the enjoyment of the school and the community.
