Classes taught through the Family and Consumer Science department are all electives. They are all for one semester for 1/2 credit.
Classes Offered
Foods I
Grade Level: 9, 10, 11, 12 - Elective
The Foods class offers the student the opportunity to learn about the nutritional needs of individuals; and to study, select, and prepare the types of foods used for appetizers, meals, and snacks. The students will also explore possible careers in the food service industry. The laboratory experience is designed to help students develop skills and confidence in the use of recipes, food preparation techniques, and kitchen equipment learned during the lecture class.
Specific topics covered include: influences of your food choices, nutrition, purchasing and caring for food, planning meals, snack foods that are not junk, food safety and sanitation, how to use recipes, measuring ingredients, use and care of equipment and kitchen appliances, food service careers. Students learn to cook quick breads, yeast breads, cookies, cakes, holiday foods, breakfast foods, lunch and dinner, pastries, snacks, desserts, fruits and vegetables, soups and salads. |

Foods II
Grade Level: 9, 10, 11, 12 - Elective
Foods II allows the student to continue exploring creative ways to prepare and serve meals. Special topics will include sports nutrition, foreign and American regional cookery, cake decorating and candy making.
Independent Living
Grade Level: 11,12 - Elective
This course is designed to help students understand the management process necessary for living a secure, independent life today. Whether living in a college dormitory, an apartment, or at home, it is important to know how to set goals, analyze resources, make financial plans, organize time, and evaluate the results. Specific components of the process include financial budgeting, consumer choices and advertising, creating and maintaining a living space and nutritional choices.
Child Development
Grade Level: 11,12 - Elective
This course will deal with the various aspects of being a parent. The first section will include discussion on the family life cycle, the role of the father, care of the mother during pregnancy and the newborn. The second half of the course will explore the physical, social-emotional, and mental development of a child from birth to age 6.
Clothing and Textiles
Grade Level: 9, 10, 11, 12 - Elective
The Clothing and Textiles class provides an opportunity to develop basic skills in the selection, use and care of sewing equipment, patterns, fabrics and sewing techniques. The students study the general principles of design that will help them to develop good judgment in fabric and clothing selection. The students will be expected to purchase their own materials for projects.
Life Skills
Grade Level: 9, 10, 11, 12 - Elective
This course is modified to meet the needs of students with Individual Services Plans. The course is designed to be a survey that provides students with experience in activities relating to food and nutrition, clothing and textiles, consumer choices, and management skills
