At Cleveland Central Catholic High School, students not only grow academically, but spiritually, socially and personally as well. Students are invited and encouraged to explore and strengthen their own faith with the guidance and instruction of the school's Campus Ministry.
Student Ministry
Student Ministers at Cleveland Central Catholic work as a team to enhance the Christianity of our school. They do this by planning class retreats, service projects, activities, masses and prayer services. Below are some of the possibilities you could be involved in as a Student Minister. Come join the team!
-
Retreats - Each year, students participate in a class retreat that encourages them to explore their faith through a non-threatening, interactive environment. On their retreat, students participate in prayer, small group sharing and discussions, and activities, all of which make it an exciting and fun day for all.
-
Hunger Awareness Week - During this week students are exposed to a variety of hunger issues. They volunteer at a local hunger center, participate in a food drive, and challenge themselves by attending a Hunger Banquet that explores hunger and poverty throughout the world.
-
See You at the Pole - On this day, Freshmen through Seniors gather together before school to pray around their flagpole for the needs of this world. Why the flagpole? This day is celebrated nation-wide with both private and public school students. While most private schools have a chapel to pray in, public schools do not. But everyone has a flagpole. SYATP is a time when students from all over can unite together in prayer.
-
Trip to Hell - Don't be scared off by the name! Trip to Hell is a haunted house, of sorts, though much scarier because it is NOT fiction. A local church in Lorain introduces students to the frightening reality of sin in our lives.
-
Shout Out Against Violence - Sponsored by PRYME Youth Media, the Shout Out Against Violence is an opportunity for students to voice their opposition to violence through media and music. Students explore alternatives to violence through creating websites, poetry, rap songs and posters revolving around this theme.
-
Stations of the Cross - Students reenact Jesus' death through living Stations of the Cross. This year, students portrayed Mary, as she watched her Son endure His death, as well as the helplessness of Jesus' disciples while Roman Soldiers and the townspeople ridiculed and crucified Him. Students also reflected on the meaning of this powerful sacrifice in their own lives.
-
Social Justice Teach-In - This event, sponsored by the Inter-Religious Task Force (IRTF) explores justice issues such as sweatshops, fair trade vs. free trade and poverty. Students attend interactive workshops that encourage them to do their part in making social justice a reality.
Service Project
As part of Cleveland Central Catholic's goal of enabling students to grow by becoming attentive and responsive to the needs and concerns of the neighborhood, the city, and the world through Christian service, service projects are required of all students while at CCCHS.
Hours required:
Freshmen: 10 hours
Sophomores: 20 hours
Juniors: 40 hours
Seniors: 40 hours
The specific place where the service hours are fulfilled must have prior approval by the Campus Minister. The student is then responsible for his/her own arrangements for transportation, completion of their project hours, and submission of the appropriate documentation to the Campus Minister before the requirement is considered complete.
-
Freshmen will complete 10 hours of service as a class or by groups in the immediate communities surrounding the campus of CCCHS. (Arranged by the Campus Minister and served during the Freshmen Year with other members of their class.)
-
Sophomores and Juniors will complete the respective amount of hours by the end of the school year. Should they not fulfill their responsibility by June 20, they will not return to Cleveland Central Catholic High School for the following year.
-
Seniors will complete their assigned hours by May 1 or will not be permitted to participate in any of the senior end-of-the-year activities including graduation ceremonies. The student's diploma will be granted when the Service Project has been completed.
Students are permitted to begin fulfillment of their Sophomore, Junior and Senior requirements from the time of their admittance to CCCHS. The operating policy applies to each of the hour breaks (20, 40 and 40) and the Campus Minister must pre-approve and then receive completed documentation before the student may begin the next level of service. If the student desires to begin early, they must contact the Campus Minister before beginning any service.
