Academic Departments

Special Education Department

Cleveland Central Catholic High School offers programs for Developmentally Handicapped (DH) and Learning Disabled (LD) students. Placement in these programs is determined by appropriate educational and psychological testing where a Service Plan has been written and the student meets the criteria for DH or LD placement.

Developmentally Handicapped

This program assists students whose educational needs are not met in the regular classroom, especially in the areas of writing, reading math, science, and life skills.

Learning Disabled

This program assists students who have the intellectual ability to learn, but have a specific learning disability that prevents them from achieving their maximum potential. Students receive both LD classroom instruction as well as tutoring (provided by a special education instructor) in their regular education classes.

Vocational evaluation and training are offered to both DH and LD students based on their residency (Cleveland only). Vocational training in areas such as horticulture, auto-mechanics, culinary arts, and child care are made available to the students after evaluation.

Students are included in regular education classes where appropriate. Adapted English classes are offered at grade levels 9-12 for students with learning disabilities. These classes follow regular curriculum. Math classes in the area of basic skills, algebra, geometry and consumer skills are also adapted to the needs of learning disabled students.

DH and LD students can participate in all extra-curricular activities, clubs and athletics.

Graduation requirements are consistent with those of students in the regular curriculum. For some students, elective classes during the junior and senior years are provided in a vocational setting through the Cleveland Municipal Schools.
